Old tractors come back to the farm

by Jim McCarty

Equipment like this thresher may be seen at the "Back to the Farm Reunion" on Sept. 6-9 east of Boonville.

In August the Brady Showgrounds, home of the Missouri River Valley Steam Engine Association, looks like any central Missouri farm. Lush green grass grows tall while shade trees protect the old farm house from the summer heat.

But on Sept. 6-9 the fields will glow bright orange as the group of antique tractor lovers holds its "Back to the Farm Reunion" featuring Allis-Chalmers tractors and equipment like the working thresher at left..

The sky will fill with clouds of coal smoke and steam from vintage engines. The seldomheard-today sound of hit and miss gas engines will be music to old timer’s ears and the many unusual events will delight young and old. Besides the big tractors, members of the Vintage Garden Tractor Club of America will put their David Bradleys, Gravelys and the like to the test in a mowing contest.

Threshing demonstrations, log skidding, corn husking, molasses making, hay baling, rock crushing and more round out the weekend activities.

The group is in their second year at a new site just east of Boonville at the Interstate 70/Highway 179 junction. For more information call (660) 882-8463 or (573) 796-4742 or check out the web site at www.mrvsea.com.
