Old
Missouri barns are a lot like people: Each one has its
own unique story and history to tell. Some witnessed new settlements
in Missouri, a few survived the Civil War, while others withstood Mother
Nature’s wrath over the years, battling blizzards, tornados and
floods. Some have been cared for with love by their owners while others
have been saved by clubs and civic organizations. Many have not been
so fortunate and due to age and neglect have met their fate and collapsed.
Before any more leave the landscape we need to preserve these monuments
to our past.
Now
Rural Missouri is helping to do just that. We are proud to
announce the publishing of a new book titled “Barns of Missouri:
Storehouses of History” written by the state’s leading
authority on the subject, Howard Marshall of Fulton, retired professor
of art hisotry and architecture at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
This beautiful 160-page, 8-1/2-inch by 11-inch, limited-edition hardcover
volume takes you on a tour through Missouri and lets you visit some
of the most unique and historic barns in the state. Going far beyond
the hundreds of beautiful pictures, this book tells why barns vary from
region to region. It offers glimpses into the thinking that produced
round barns. It covers folkways like barn dances and how crops produced
changes in barn styles. Best of all, it preserves forever the vanishing
architecture that contributes so much to rural living.
“Barns
of Missouri: Storehouses of History” will make a perfect gift
for anyone who loves barns, country charm, agriculture, architecture
and history. “Barns of Missouri: Storehouses of History”
is also a great present for yourself!
Don’t miss your chance to own a copy
of this limited-edition book. “Barns of Missouri: Storehouses
of History” is sure to be a favorite for years to come.
