Our Staff

CONTENTS

For the past 14 years Rural Missouri has been produced by the same five individuals. Together we represent a wide variety of backgrounds and interests but we share a great love for Missouri, its history and people. Please feel free to contact any one of us with comments or suggestions.

Editor Jim McCarty joined the staff of Rural Missouri in 1985. A University of Missouri School of Journalism graduate, Jim has been honored by the Cooperative Communicators Association as 1994 "Writer of the Year" and has received that organization's coveted Michael Graznik young communicator award. Twice, Jim has led the Rural Missouri staff to national recognition as the recipient of George W. Haggard Memorial Journalism Award from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.

Production Manager Mary Davis joined Rural Missouri in 1990 after working for the Missouri Department of Agriculture. Mary is the liason with our printer, handles postal issues and oversees the budgeting process for Rural Missouri and is responsible for all of the display advertising in Rural Missouri and also assists the entire staff with computer graphics.

A University of Missouri School of Journalism graduate, Managing editor Bob McEowen worked as a newspaper photographer before joining Rural Missouri in 1989. Bob is a four-time CCA Photographer of the Year winner. Bob coordinates the editorial content for Rural Missouri and is administrator of the Web sites for Rural Missouri and the Association of Missouri Electric Cooperatives.

Associate Editor Heather Berry left Gov. John Ashcroft's press staff to join Rural Missouri in 1989. In addition to regular features Heather produces our Home and Hearth page and is the alter-ego of Buddy Bear, Rural Missouri's Just 4 Kids mascot. Heather also handles freelance submissions.

Field Editor Jason Jenkins comes to us from the University of Missouri Extension and Ag Information News Group where he was a news writer and photographer. He is a 2000 graduate of the University of Missouri Ag Journalism program and is a member of both the Missouri Outdoor Communicators and the Outdoor Writers Association of America, serving as that group’s Education Committee chairman.

Staff assistant, Jammie Alber handles our classified advertising and subscriptions and untold other responsibilities. During the middle of August, she's often found inside a bear suit as she appears as Buddy Bear at the Missouri State Fair's MEC Building

Graphic Arts Specialists Ruth Graves and Angie Jones-Gerber produce the cooperative local pages that appear either outside or in the middle of Rural Missouri. Ruth is past president of the Missouri Rural Electric Women's Association and edited that group's historical retrospective "The Day the Lights Came On."
